Day of Remembrance Events Around the Country

February 18, 2012 - February 25, 2012
This year marks 70 years since the signing of Executive Order 9066 which led to the incarceration of close to 120,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry, two-thirds of whom were American citizens. To mark this important day in American history, communities across the country will be holding various Day of Remembrance events. Here is a partial listing:

Boston’s ‘From Confinement to College’ Day of Remembrance
BOSTON, MA

The event’s featured speakers are UMass Boston professor Paul Watanabe and graduate student Laura Ng, who will discuss the oral history film they recently completed about the Nisei during World War II. The co-sponsors of the event include New England JACL, the Institute of Asian American Studies, the Nisei Student Relocation Commemorative Fund and the Asian American Resource Workshop.

Part of the Day of Remembrance event will include the awarding of replica Congressional Gold Medals to local Japanese American World War II veterans.

Day of Remembrance 2012 From Honouliuli to Guantanamo: Due Process Under Siege

The Honolulu chapter of the JACL is hosting the 2012 Day of Remembrance event with the theme "From Honouliuli to Guantanamo: Due Process Under Siege.” There will be a short film on Hawaii internment and the stories of those internees. The keynote speaker will be former acting U.S. Solicitor Gen. Neal Katyal.

Day of Remembrance, Greater Monterey Bay Area JACL Chapters
SALINAS, CA

"Rodeo Roundup," a presentation of the Japanese American Museum of San Jose (JAMsj), will be featured. The Salinas Rodeo Grounds was established by the government as a "holding ground" before Japanese Americans were incarcerated at Poston, Arizona. Bilingual storyteller Megumi will also be featured in addition to former internees who will talk about their experiences. The program will begin at the California Historical Monument and Memorial Garden before hearding to the Steinbeck Institute of Arts and Culture. The event is being sponsored by the Gilroy, Monterey Peninsula, San Benito County, Salinas Valley and Watsonville-Santa Cruz JACL chapters.

Los Angeles Day of Remembrance Ceremony

The 2012 Day of Remembrance program will explore the theme “70 years After E.O. 9066: Defending Our Civil Liberties,” with the keynote speaker Robin Toma of the L.A. County Human Relations commission. There will also be a stage performance by Nikkei and Muslim Americans. Event organizers include the Nikkei for Civil Rights & Redress, the PSW district of JACL and the Japanese American National Museum.
