President Nominates Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao to Permanent Role
Months after John Phelan announced his resignation as Navy secretary, President Donald Trump announced via social media that he has nominated acting Navy secretary Hung Cao to take on the role in a permanent capacity. Cao spent 25 years in the Navy before retiring in October 2021. He served with SEAL teams and special forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. A federal law, however, requires that a nominee for a military secretary role must have been retired for a minimum of seven years, meaning he would be ineligible without a congressional waiver.
LAPD Arrests Man in Slashing/Stabbing Attack at Little Tokyo Pizzeria
Two unidentified customers of Prime Pizza, located at 141 S. Central Ave. in Little Tokyo, were taken to the hospital on Sept. 7 after being attacked by a knife-wielding man while dining in the restaurant’s outdoor patio area. The Los Angeles Police Department arrested the man on the premises and has asked the public to come forward with any additional information on the incident.
Prosecutors Begin Long-Gestating Racketeering Trial Against Huawei
The Associated Press reported that the racketeering conspiracy trial of Huawei Technologies began in Brooklyn on Sept. 9. Federal prosecutors have accused the Chinese company of stealing technology from companies including Cisco Systems and Motorola Solutions, abusing the U.S. financial system and helping Iran snoop on its citizens. The trial could last four months. Because of concerns that the world’s biggest supplier of gear for wireless telecom networks is a security risk, Huawei was banned from selling its equipment to U.S. carriers and has also been blacklisted by Canada and Britain. Huawei’s lawyers say the charges are a misguided effort to target Chinese people and businesses.
