Announcing the Dr. Bo and Mrs. Ikuyo Sakaguchi Scholarship

The San Fernando Valley Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League (SFVJACL) is proud to announce the Dr. Bo and Mrs. Ikuyo Sakaguchi Scholarship for students who will enter college in Fall 2015. Generously endowed by Dr. and Mrs. Sakaguchi, the award supports outstanding students with experience and/or interests in civil rights and social justice. Scholarships include awards up to $1,000.

Applicants must have a minimum SAT score of 1700, a minimum GPA of 3.2, a record of community service, and write a brief essay about civil rights issues facing Asian Americans. Applicants must also be a member of the SFVJACL. The scholarship application is available here and JACL membership is available here. All materials must be submitted by April 1, 2015 for consideration.

The Sakaguchis are longtime philanthropists and residents of the San Fernando Valley. Guided by their dedication and foresight, they have long supported many community-based issues and institutions including the SFVJACL and the San Fernando Valley Japanese American Community Center. Established in 1942, the SFVJACL is a very active chapter that works in areas such as civil liberties, education about of the mass incarceration of Japanese and Japanese Americans, historical preservation, LGBTQ rights, as well as global issues such as support for Asian comfort women.
